Every week I answer the burning question, “So how does this consignment thing work anyway?”
Lets talk consignment, and discover the process for turning your gently loved clothing into cash — while also giving your garments a new and adoring home, and making some $$$ in the process!
To get started, you need to go shopping in your closet. Look for the things that you’re ready to pass along, but that still have a lot of life left in them. You’re looking for items that are clean, lightly worn, seasonal, currently in fashion, have good color saturation (not faded), and without fuzz balls/pills. They should be items that you would feel good about spending money on if you were looking at them for the first time. Take a look at our Best Selling Brands Page for a list of brands that we love — but don’t feel entirely limited to these names, we are looking for quality and style as much as we’re looking for name-brands.
Once you have gathered up all of your potential consignments head on over to Consign Couture! We ask that you bring your items to us in an organized fashion, and on hangers if possible, if thats not possible then make sure they are not in a pile or too wrinkled. This makes our job easier, while keeping your garments happily crease free and presentable in route to their new homes. Your hangers will be returned to you. Your items will always be looked at enthusiastically, and always without judgment at Consign Couture. Our consigners are the life of our business, and you and your garments will always be treated as such. We will take whatever we feel we have the right audience for. It is never about our personal style, but about the community of ladies that we serve. If we think it will sell, it joins our inventory. You don’t need an appointment, just come on in and shop while we look at your goodies, or feel free to just drop them off and be on your way. We will simply ask that you fill out a consigner form letting us know how to contact you.
We will keep your clothes on our racks for 60 days (or up to 1 year, depending on the items), and we write checks to our consigners on the 10th of each month for 40% of what the items sell for. You can pick up your check on the 10th or after, or come shopping any time and use whatever credit you may have for new beauties to fill up the closet space you’ve made. And you don’t even have to wait till you get to the shop to find out what you’ve sold, because your inventory list will be emailed to you, from which you can see live when your items have sold.
At the end of the 60 days period, any items that are still with us can be returned to you, or be donated. You will tell us which you prefer when you fill out your consigner form. If you’d like to donate your items, you can rest assured that they will still be going to a wonderful home. We donate most unsold items to several area charities.
You can de-clutter and refashion your closet while supporting local businesses and other good causes all in one swoop. We all deserve to feel great in our clothing, and that goal is easier for us all to achieve when we repurpose and recycle our styles. Americans today throw away an average of 68lbs of clothing into landfills each year per person, yup, all 313,000,000 of us! So we hope that you will join us in relying less on mass produced clothing, and instead supporting one another (and the earth) in a more affordable and fun way to style by giving consignment a try.
